TMC ENTERTAINMENT OFFERS THE SECRET PASSAGE OF DR. ZHIVAGO FOR MIPCOM
Documentary Unveils Story Behind the Smuggling of the Controversial Novel Out of Russia to the West
(Cannes, France October 10, 2003) TMC Entertainment has licensed the worldwide distribution rights from Eikon Sudwest GmbH for "The Secret Passage of Dr. Zhivago," a one hour documentary based on previously clandestine files concerning the smuggling of Boris Pasternak's classic novel about the Russian revolution into Italy, according to Drew S. Levin, CEO of TMC Entertainment.
"Dr. Zhivago is one of the great classics of the 20th century. Most people know it from the Academy Award-winning film starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie. What they don't know is the unbelievable back story of how this novel was written and secreted to Italy to be published" said Levin. "Pasternak and others risked their lives to see that this book, which was condemned by the Soviets, got published. After they see our special they will understand the danger involved for those who were determined to see this novel published," said Levin.
The special features footage, archival film and commentary from Carlo and Inge Feltrinelli the children of Italian publisher Giacomo Feltrinelli, Evegenji Pasternak the son of the late author, and Sergei Khrushchev, whose father was the premier of the Soviet Union during the period the novel was completed and smuggled out of the country.
The book was the first global bestseller of the 20th century. Pasternak received the Nobel Prize for literature, but was forced to decline the award out of fear of reprisals from the Soviets. Pasternak died in 1960 never having seen his novel published in his own country. It took the fall of the Soviet Union more than 30 years later to open the way for "Dr. Zhivago" to be published in Russia.
"The Secret Passage of Dr. Zhivago" is a co-production of ZDF/ARTE, YLE (the Finish Broadcasting Company) and AVRO, and was produced by Ulli Pfau. TMC Entertainment controls international distribution rights to the special.
